Hi, my name is Romany, and I am the Reading Lady - your local Auslan Storyteller. I have worked in libraries for over twenty years, specialising in children's programming. I have curated a collection of traditional and contemporary picture books that I showcase with lively storytelling. Auslan is integrated in every lesson, and through repetition, children will practise and learn key word signs. I visit kindys and day-care centres across Brisbane.
These 45-minute storytelling sessions are tailored to Pre-Kindy and Kindy age groups. Each week I explore a new theme with books, rhymes, felt stories and puppets. These themes tie into current events such as NAIDOC Week, Children's Book Week, ANZAC Day, Christmas and much more!
In my storytelling sessions I encourage children to interact with the texts and promote active listening. Children practice Auslan key signs throughout the session.
"It was a truly magical experience that combined literacy, learning, and connection — thank you to The Reading Lady for such an inspiring visit! " - Centre Director
"You are the highlight of her week. She comes home every Tuesday teaching us all the things “The Reading Lady” taught her... thank you. " - learners' mum
"I liked the incorporation of the Auslan key signs. We continued to practice the signs when the Reading Lady left." - Educator
We sang this song, using Auslan signs, for NAIDOC week!
Can you guess these four Auslan signs?
